Course Syllabus - 6th Grade Mathematics
I hope that you had a wonderful summer with your family and friends. I look forward to working with you and your child. One factor of great success is good organization, therefore we would like to ask you to consider the following when getting and keeping your children ready for the 2009 -2010 school year. El Sereno Middle School is a standards-based school. Through clear expectations, students will follow the contents of the California State Standards for 6th grade math, and in turn students will be assessed on their performance and knowledge of them. This class will challenge students to think, and present their work verbally, graphically, and numerically as we apply math to real life events because this will be the foundation for future math courses.
Instructional Units/Focus Standards
The following are instructional units that will be addressed throughout the course:
Unit 1: Rational Numbers: How to connect properties and applications6
NS 1.1 Compare and order positive and negative fractions, decimals, and mixed numbersand place them on a number line.
6 NS 2.4 Determine the least common multiple and the greatest common divisor of wholenumbers; use them to solve problems with fractions(e.g., to find a commondenominator to add two fractions or to find the reduced form for a fraction)
Unit 2: Algebraic Thinking and proportional Reasoning
6 NS 1.2 Interpret and use ratios in different contexts (e.g., batting averages, miles per hour) toshow the relative sizes of two quantities, using appropriate notations (a/b, a to b, a:b).
6 NS 1.3 Use proportions to solve problems (e.g., determine the value of N if 4 7 21 N _ ; find thelength of a side of a polygon similar to a known polygon). Use cross multiplication as amethod to solving such problems, understanding it as the multiplication of both sides ofan equation by a multiplicative inverse
6 NS 1.4 Calculate given percentages of quantities and solve problems involving discounts at sales,interest earned, and tips.6 NS 2.3 Solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems, including those arisingin concrete situations, that use positive and negative integers and combinations of theseoperations.
6 AF 1.1 Write and solve one-step linear equations in one variable.
6 AF 2.2 Demonstrate an understanding that rate is a measure of one quantity per unit value ofanother quantity.
Unit 3: Statistics, Data Analysis and Probability
6 SDAP 2.2 Identify different ways of selecting a sample (e.g., convenience sampling, responses to asurvey, random sampling) and which method makes a sample more representative for aPopulation.
6 SDAP 2.3 Analyze data displays and explain why the way in which the question was asked mighthave influenced the results obtained and why the way in which the results were displayedmight have influenced the conclusions reached.
6 SDAP 2.4 Identify data that represent sampling errors and explain why the sample (and the display)might be biased.
6 SDAP 2.5 Identify claims based on statistical data and, in simple cases, evaluate the validity of theclaims.
6 SDAP 3.1 Represent all possible outcomes for compound events in an organized way (e.g., tables,grids, tree diagrams) and express the theoretical probability of each outcome.
6 SDAP 3.3 Represent probabilities as ratios, proportions, decimals between 0 and 1, and percentagesbetween 0 and 100 and verify that the probabilities computed are reasonable; know that ifP is the probability of an event, 1- P is the probability of an event not occurring.
6 SDAP 3.5 Understand the difference between independent and dependent events.
Unit 4: Plane and Solid Shapes
6 MG 1.1 Understand the concept of a constant such as _ ; know the formulas for the circumferenceand area of a circle.
6 MG 2.2 Use the properties of complementary and supplementary angles and the sum of the angles of a triangle to solve problems involving an unknown angle.
Parent/ Guardian ExpectationsParents/guardians are expected to engage in their child’s progress by making sure that the student is accomplishing all assignments, and by communicating with the child about the progress that is being achieved in class. In order for any student to be successful parents are expected to be involved in the students learning and keep informed about the student’s academic needs.
Grading Policy and Scale
The student’s academic grade is based on the following categories:
Warm-Ups, Cornell Notes, CW, HW, Assessments, Projects, Class Business, Notebook Checks, Participation, and Group Work. *Attendance is a very important factor to the success of each student.
Grade Rubric: Grades will be calculated using the following:
100% - 90% = A 4: Superior. Tests 40%
89% - 80% = B 3: Satisfactory Quizzes/Project 30%
79% - 70% = C 2. nearly satisfactory Homework 20%
69% - 60% = D 1: Unsatisfactory. Classwork 10%
Assignment Policy
Assignments will be given on a daily basis. Specific homework assignments are given every day. Students are required to finish in class assignments and take home assignments to complete at home. On days when students have completed their work, students should review the week’s lesson and study for future exams. Parents are asked to help monitor this process and assist students in keeping organized. In this respect, students should always have an assignment to take home for this course.
